ATHLONE INSTITUTE
The Athlone Institute Trust (AIT) was established in 1926, when residents of the Paarl area recognised the need for Higher Educational facilities for coloured students. AIT aims to make funds available to assist students with their tertiary studies.

ABOUT THE BURSARY
In 1998, the Bursary Project Committee was founded and later in 2006 became renamed as “The Athlone Institute Bursary Project Fund (AIBPROF)”. AIBPROF has since helped more than 1500 students with their tertiary studies.
Bursaries are awarded to students residing within the Paarl or Mbekweni area (Western Cape) OR students who are a parishioner at any of the five members churches of the AIT (which include: St Stephen’s Anglican Church, Immanuel UR Church, Bethel United Congregational Church (UCC), Holy Trinity Anglican Church, Zions Uniting Reformed Church).
In 2024, the AIT awarded R900 000 in bursaries to 81 students, studying towards various qualifications.
Minimum entry criteria before applying:

ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS FOR THE ATHLONE INSTITUTE BURSARY
Applicants must satisfy the following minimum entry criteria before applying (please note that failure to satisfy all the requirements will lead to your application not being considered):
- You must be a South African citizen
- You must be a permanent resident of Paarl or Mbekweni OR a parishioner at one of the five member churches of the Athlone Institute Trust (AIT).
- You must be a member of one of the member churches, of the AIT, or a member at any bona-fide denomination/ religious institution in Paarl or Mbekweni.
- You must have completed matric and obtained a matric certificate,
- You must prove financial need
- You must have a proven strong academic record,
- You must be enrolled to study towards an undergraduate or postgraduate qualification, on a full-time or part-time basis, for 2025
- You must be enrolled to study at a tertiary institution (TVET College/ University/ University of Technology) recognised and accredited by the Council for Higher Education.
- If you are currently studying, you must have passed your previous year of study.
- You must be willing to partake in community service within the Paarl/ Mbekweni area.
- You must be willing to partake in the mentoring programme.

- Proof of registration fee payment for 2025 (certified copy)
- Proof of residence
- Parents/ guardians / own / spouse’s recent payslips (certified copies) OR sworn affidavits if they are unemployed
- 1st year tertiary students: Matric results (certified copy),
- Senior or postgraduate tertiary students: Full Academic record (certified copy).
- Official Testimonial from your Religious Leader.
